Lightning Protection · Live 3D Overview

Lightning Protection Systems

Design, installation, and inspection of lightning protection systems that direct strike energy safely to ground — protecting buildings, equipment, and personnel.

Three Links in One Protection Chain

From the first strike to the last electrode

A lightning protection system only works if every link holds: air terminals intercept the strike, down-conductors route it, and the earth termination dissipates it. A gap in any one compromises the whole. Watch each stage in live 3D.

Why it matters

01
Protect people

Direct strikes injure personnel. A designed path for the energy keeps it out of occupied spaces, and a sound earth termination limits dangerous voltage across the ground around the building.

02
Protect property and equipment

A strike doesn't stop at the structure. The energy travels through electrical wiring, data cables and grounding, taking out servers, network equipment, gate motors, security systems and production machinery at once.

03
Protect the business

Insurance claims and business-interruption costs far exceed the cost of protection. In our experience the cost of protection is typically less than a single lightning-related equipment loss.

01·Air Terminals · Strike Interception

Air Terminals & Strike Interception

Strike interception devices positioned per your building's geometry and exposure.

Lightning takes the highest, sharpest path available. Air terminals give it a place to land that we chose, so the strike is intercepted before it reaches the structure, the people inside it, or the equipment on the roof. Placement is designed for your roof geometry and exposure, to recognized standards including NFPA 780 and IEC 62305.

  • Towers and masts get terminal placement and conductor routing down the structure
  • Designed together with the earth termination so the energy always has somewhere to go

02·Down-Conductors · Bonding

Down-Conductors & Bonding

Properly sized and routed conductors that give the strike a low-impedance path to ground.

Once a strike is intercepted, the energy has to reach earth without detouring through your building. Down-conductors are sized and routed for a low-impedance path, with proper bonding so the roof network, the structure's metalwork and the grounding system behave as one connected system.

03·Earth Termination · Grounding Integration

Earth Termination & Grounding Integration

A ground ring and electrodes that dissipate strike energy into the earth, not into your equipment.

Grounding is the foundation of lightning protection. If the earth termination is high-resistance or degraded, the energy can't dissipate and travels through your equipment instead. We inspect and integrate the grounding system as part of every lightning protection system, so the last link in the chain holds, and so dangerous voltage differences don't build up across the ground where people stand and walk.

Assess your building's lightning risk

Jamaica experiences significant lightning activity, particularly during the rainy season. Any commercial building with valuable equipment, personnel or critical operations should have a properly designed system. A site survey identifies your exposure and protection gaps and gives you an accurate scope and quote.

LayerPhysical Infrastructure

Lightning protection is the first layer of the infrastructure stack — the physical defence that everything above depends on.

Lightning doesn't just strike — it cascades

A direct or nearby lightning strike doesn't just damage the structure it hits. The energy travels through electrical wiring, data cables, and grounding systems, destroying equipment throughout the building. Without a properly designed lightning protection system, a single strike can take out servers, network equipment, gate motors, security systems, and production machinery simultaneously.

  • Direct strikes damage structures and injure personnel
  • Induced surges travel through power and data lines, destroying connected equipment
  • Grounding systems that are inadequate or degraded redirect energy into equipment instead of earth
  • Insurance claims and business interruption costs far exceed the cost of protection

This is important to

What we engineer

Lightning Protection System Design

Air terminals, down conductors, and grounding networks designed to recognized standards for your building's geometry and exposure.

Installation

Professional installation with proper conductor routing, bonding, and connection to the grounding system.

Inspection & Certification

Annual inspections and certification that verify system integrity and identify degradation before it matters.

Grounding Integration

Coordination with grounding and earthing systems to ensure strike energy reaches earth, not your equipment.

Surge Protection Coordination

Integration with surge protective devices (SPDs) on power and data lines for layered defense against induced surges.

How we work

01

Assess

We survey your building, identify exposure risks, evaluate existing grounding, and assess equipment vulnerability.

02

Engineer

We design a lightning protection system with correct air terminal placement, conductor routing, and grounding integration.

03

Install

Our engineering team installs the system with proper bonding, conductor sizing, and connection to the grounding network.

04

Maintain

Annual inspections verify system integrity, identify corrosion or degradation, and certify continued protection.

Engineering standards

Our lightning protection systems are designed to recognized standards. We coordinate the full protection chain: air terminals (strike interception), down conductors (energy routing), grounding system (energy dissipation), and surge protective devices (equipment protection). Each layer must work together — a gap in any one compromises the whole.

Does my commercial building need lightning protection in Jamaica?+

Jamaica experiences significant lightning activity, particularly during the rainy season. Any commercial building with valuable equipment, personnel, or critical operations should have a properly designed lightning protection system. The cost of protection is typically a fraction of the cost of a single lightning-related loss.

What is the difference between lightning protection and surge protection?+

Lightning protection systems intercept direct strikes and route the energy safely to ground. Surge protection devices (SPDs) protect equipment from transient voltage that travels through power and data lines — including induced surges from nearby strikes. Both are needed for complete protection.

How does grounding affect lightning protection?+

Grounding is the foundation of lightning protection. If the grounding system has high resistance or is degraded, strike energy cannot dissipate into earth and instead travels through your equipment. We inspect and integrate grounding as part of every lightning protection system.

How often should a lightning protection system be inspected?+

Lightning protection systems should be inspected annually and after any major weather event. Corrosion, loose connections, and building modifications can all compromise system integrity. We provide inspection and certification services.

Can you upgrade an existing lightning protection system?+

Yes. We assess existing systems, identify gaps or degradation, and upgrade components to meet current standards. This is particularly important for buildings that have been modified or expanded since the original system was installed.

What standards do you design lightning protection systems to?+

Our lightning protection systems are designed to recognized international standards including NFPA 780 (Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems) and IEC 62305. We coordinate the full protection chain — air terminals, down conductors, grounding, and surge protection — to ensure each layer works together.

How much does lightning protection cost in Jamaica?+

The cost of a lightning protection system depends on the building size, height, roof type, and existing grounding infrastructure. A site survey is required to provide an accurate quote. In our experience, the cost of protection is typically less than the cost of a single lightning-related equipment loss. Contact us for a site survey and quotation.

Do you provide lightning protection for telecom towers and radio masts?+

Yes. Telecom towers, radio masts, and elevated communications infrastructure are among the highest-risk structures for lightning strikes. We design and install protection systems specifically for towers, including air terminal placement, conductor routing down the tower structure, and integration with the site grounding system.
