The Gate That Only Works When the Rain Stops

Somewhere in St Andrew right now, a homeowner is standing at their gate in the rain, pressing the remote like it's a stubborn TV button — harder each time, as if pressure adds signal. The gate, meanwhile, is ignoring them completely. This is not a coincidence. October is when Kingston's gate openers hold their annual conference and vote on who's quitting first.

Why wet season murders gate motors

A gate motor lives outside, all year, in a box. Inside that box is a control board — a small, sensitive computer that was never told it would be stationed in the tropics. When the afternoon storms roll down off the hills, three things happen:

  • Water finds a way in. Cable entries, cracked conduit, a housing seal that gave up two years ago. Moisture on a PCB doesn't always kill it immediately — it corrodes the tracks slowly, so the gate dies "for no reason" in November after October's rain.
  • Insects move in. Geckos and ants treat a warm motor housing like a New Kingston apartment with ocean views. Gecko, meet 240V. Nobody wins.
  • Power surges ride the grid. Every lightning flash miles away sends a little spike down the line. One big one cooks the board. Lots of small ones cook it slowly.

The tell-tale signs your gate is storm-damaged

Gate works on sunny days, dead after rain. Remote range suddenly drops to ten feet. Gate opens halfway, gives up, then works fine tomorrow. Each of these is a symptom, not a mystery.

What proper installation looks like

A correctly installed gate motor in Jamaica gets: sealed conduit entries (pointed down, not up — water follows gravity), a breathable housing, a surge protector on the supply, and a motor rated for the actual weight and length of your gate — not the one that was on sale.

How we approach it

Innovera's security team services and upgrades gate systems across Kingston and St Andrew — including the brushless motor upgrades that handle our climate better than older brushed units. Every installation gets surge protection and weather sealing as standard, because in Kingston, "it works" and "it works in October" are different specifications.
