Cloud Migration Strategy for Caribbean Enterprises
Moving to the cloud is not a single decision — it is a series of decisions about what to move, when, how, and to whom. Caribbean enterprises face additional considerations around connectivity, data sovereignty, and latency that make a thoughtful strategy essential.
Step 1: Assess what you have
Before migrating, inventory your applications, data, and infrastructure. Classify each system by:
- Criticality — how essential is it to daily operations?
- Usage pattern — is it constant, bursty, or seasonal?
- Data sensitivity — are there regulatory or contractual constraints on where data is stored?
- Technical debt — how old is the system, and how hard is it to move?
This inventory determines your migration order and strategy.
Step 2: Choose your cloud model
Not everything belongs in the public cloud. The right mix depends on your workloads:
- Public cloud (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) — best for variable workloads, new applications, and systems that need to scale
- Private cloud — best for sensitive data and systems with predictable, high utilization
- Hybrid — the most common reality; some systems in public cloud, some on-premise
For Caribbean enterprises, hybrid is often the starting point because connectivity to US data centers is good but not perfect, and some systems need local hosting for latency or regulatory reasons.
Step 3: Plan connectivity
Cloud migration increases your dependency on internet connectivity. Before moving any critical system, ensure your connectivity has:
- Redundant links from different providers
- Sufficient bandwidth for the migrated workloads
- Low-latency routes to your chosen cloud region
Step 4: Migrate in waves
Start with low-risk, low-complexity systems. Email and file storage are common first moves. Move critical systems only after you have confidence in the process and connectivity.
Step 5: Optimize after migration
Cloud costs can spiral without governance. Set up cost monitoring, right-size instances, and establish a review cadence. The cloud is not cheaper by default — it is cheaper when managed.
